Clayathon 2010

I don’t know what I enjoyed more: watching Wilma Yost of Polymer Clay Express demonstrating the Dream Machine and trying it out for myself, watching Melanie West’s demos, catching some of Arlene Groch’s enthusiasm or having uninterrupted time to continue working through Polymer Clay Color Inspirations.

I clayed, drank whiskey, sat up until 7:00 am one night (morning?) claying and chatting, made new friends and saw old ones.
Everyone had a wonderful, relaxing time.  See you in 2011!

My Old New Couch

OK, so it’s not really new, but the cushion covers are. I also made floor pillows (shown on the couch here) throw pillows for the couch and leather chairs, and covers for a couple of bed pillows (the pillows slip in a slit in the back) that are  good for lounging.  I heard someone say that being “green” does not mean that you throw away your belongings and buy new things made with organic materials; it means you find a way to reuse what you already have. That’s what I did.  One less couch in a land fill.

These are called “hamburger cushions.    My mother-in-law had them on her sofa and I always admired them.  My mother taught me how to make box cushions and piping,  but I had no idea how to make hamburger cushions and could not find a pattern.  I don’t sew enough to be able to figure it out.  Then, one day, someone on my block threw out a sofa with hamburger cushions.  I swiped  one of the covers and figured out how to make my own.  Saved by my not-so-inner dumpster diver.

I tacked the striped material to the front of the couch.

This is the back of the bed pillow cover.

I had to make miles of piping for this project.  I learned a wonderful new way to cut and sew the fabric fast and neatly.  Here are the YouTube videos.

I hereby nominate Karen Erickson for a Nobel Prize in sewing!

One last thing.  Most home decor junkies are lamenting the passage of Domino Magazine. The good news is  the former editor of Domino started  Lonny Magazine which you can only read on line. Check it out!

Here’s a picture of the winning project

Craftster  is a wonderful online  crafting community where members post thousands of tutorials and DIY projects every year on every craft you could imagine.   It’s one of the first places I go when I want to learn something about a craft.  It’s an honor and a surprize to have been named a 2009 winner.

See all the  Best of 2009 winners here and the Spoon Bracelet project here.   Here is some more information and comments.

And now I’m off to Clayathon!  Here are pictures from Clayathon 2008 and Clayathon 2009.

Stained Glass Pendants and Suncatcher

Some Christmas gifts from this year. The glass is foiled and hand cut. I used glass on the back of the pendants (fourth picture) in a color to compliment the picture on the front, and I had fun mixing yarn from my stash for hanging the pendants. Since I didn’t have any fold over cord ends, I made wire ends to hold the yarn together, and attached the clasps to them.

I got the globules in the sun catcher at the dollar store. I didn’t take any classes in these techniques; I learned everything I know from YouTube videos.
